Accelerated Learning
Accelerated learning, or superlearning, is an approach to learning which has developed through the increase in understanding there is about how the human brain works and about its incredible capacity. Accelerated learning methods, therefore, are concerned with how the learner can make more effective use of the brain, rather than to encourage ever increasing amounts of effort. Indeed, for optimal learning students should be suitably relaxed, since under such conditions they will be more receptive. Accelerated learning seeks to encourage the use of both left and right hemispheres of the brain (see Left Brain-Right Brain), and, in particular, the use of visual images and colour. Such learning is not only highly effective, but it can also be stimulating and enjoyable. Another variant of accelerated learning is Suggestopedia, and my own Brainware workshops were inspired by the same ideas.
Accelerated Learning with Colin Rose
Within the UK one of the chief proponents of accelerated learning is Colin Rose. He has set up a company, Accelerated Learning Systems Ltd., which provides language learning materials, as well as course materials for accelerated learning generally and also for drawing.
Some of the key features of the Colin Rose approach are as follows:
- It encourages people to discover their own preferred learning style. For example, to what extent are you a visual, auditory or kinaesthetic (i.e. physical) learner? Knowing this can guide you into more fruitful ways of working. (See NLP, which is also concerned with one's preferred learning style.
- It also encourages people to develop and use their seven intelligences, as proposed by Dr Howard Gardner, i.e. linguistic, mathematical/logical, visual/spatial, musical, bodily/physical, inter-personal and intra-personal.
- It puts emphasis on having a positive attitude, motivation, clear goals and strategies for working.
- It proposes the use of a range of methods, including learning maps (see Mind-Mapping), mnemonic techniques, games and visualisation.
- And it also encourages you to have fun!
