Body
One of the concepts of mind-body-spirit or whole brain thinking is that we are multi-faceted beings, and that we perform most effectively when all our component parts function co-operatively and effectively. In terms of the human body, for example, if we ensure that we get plenty of exercise and fresh air, this can have a positive toning effect, aiding our digestion, sleep pattern and general well-being. And if we feel good and sleep soundly, this can give us more energy and increase our capacity to cope well with life.
The Greek precept "healthy mind in healthy body" points to the interconnectedness of our mental and physical states. The body provides a whole 'support system' for the brain (and vice versa), and if the body is maintained in an optimal state of health this must provide a sound basis for effective mental functioning. In this connection see Yoga as an example of a practice which works largely on the body to create a state of well-being in both mind and body. And in similar vein Ayurvedic medicine (see below), one of the oldest medical systems in the world, places emphasis on the close link between bodily well-being and mental well-being.
Some Key Features of the Body
It is one of the tenets of Brainware that if we wish maintain an optimal mental state then we should develop a good personal life-style. Some of the key features of this are:
- Diet
A good diet is one which provides all the nutrients we require and which leaves us feeling energised.
- Exercise
The effect of physical exercise, such as brisk walking, on mental state has been well documented. People often 'take a walk' to clear their heads, calm down after a stressful event or generally feel more energised and in control.
- Relaxation
Like exercise, the use of relaxation techniques can enable the mind to become more calm, clear and alert, and in an ideal state for creative learning.
- Sleep
Absence of sleep has a detrimental effect on brain functioning, including irritability, tension and impaired performance. The establishment of a good sleep pattern is therefore vitally important.
