Motivation
Motivation is at the very heart of personal effectiveness. When you are highly motivated about what you are doing, you have great enthusiasm and energy, everything seems to be much easier and you advance by leaps and bounds. By contrast, when you have little motivation, life is dull, everything is an effort and progress is slow.
Some further points about motivation:
- Motivation is closely bound up with self-esteem. Thus, when you are highly motivated you feel good about what you are doing and your self-esteem increases; likewise any increase in your self-esteem raises your expectation of what you are capable of and so serves to motivate you.
- In terms of the holistic learning model of John Heron, motivation links strongly with our feeling and imaginal psychological modes. Thus, we become highly motivated about our 'project' when we develop a deep rapport for it ('feeling') and open up creatively to all its possibilities ('imaginal'). Joseph Campbell described such a personal engagement as "following your bliss".
- Motivation is about enthusiasm and harnessing your energies, and therefore in a practical sense it relies on a life-style which promotes vitality, rather than fatigue.
- High motivation is also bound up with having a clear sense of direction and a goal which you are aiming for. This involves a deep concentration and the focusing of all one's mental efforts on the task in hand.
- A person with high motivation has the capacity to deal with negativity and is able to survive those times when the 'project' hits hard times.
Recommendations
The recommendations here are similar to those for self-esteem. Thus as teachers, managers or colleagues, we need to become more alive to the key role which motivation plays in people's personal effectiveness and their feeling of well-being. We should also seek to influence our organisations, so that they contribute to people's motivation and self-esteem. Finally, we should be constantly sensitive to our own level of motivation and, where necessary, be seeking to raise it. This can be assisted by attending personal development and similar workshops.
